Vadodara, January 11, 2026 – India clinched a hard-fought four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first One Day International, chasing down a stiff target of 301 with six balls to spare to take a 1–0 lead in the three-match series.

Batting first, New Zealand posted a competitive 300 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs. Daryl Mitchell top-scored with a fluent 84, while Henry Nicholls (62) and Devon Conway (56) provided solid support. For India, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna picked up two wickets each, to keep the scoring in check during the middle overs.

In reply, India rode on a composed and authoritative 93 from Virat Kohli, who anchored the chase under pressure. Captain Shubman Gill contributed a steady 56, while Shreyas Iyer added a brisk 49 to keep India on course. Late contributions from KL Rahul (29 not out) and Harshit Rana helped India reach 306 for 6 in 49 overs.

For New Zealand, Kyle Jamieson was the standout bowler with four wickets, but India’s batting depth and calm finishing proved decisive. The win gives India early momentum as the series moves to the second ODI.
