A powerful 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck southern and central Mexico on Thursday, sending strong tremors across several states and triggering emergency evacuations, including in Mexico City. The epicentre was located in Guerrero state, close to the Pacific coast.

The quake caused damage to homes, roads and public infrastructure, with landslides reported in hilly regions. Authorities confirmed at least two deaths, one near the epicentre due to a building collapse and another during evacuation efforts in the capital. Several injuries and widespread property damage were also reported.

The tremors forced the suspension of a live press conference by President Claudia Sheinbaum, as warning alarms sounded and officials temporarily evacuated the venue before proceedings resumed later.

Emergency services remain on alert as damage assessments and safety inspections continue, with officials cautioning residents about the risk of aftershocks. Mexico lies along a highly active seismic zone on the Pacific Rim and regularly experiences earthquakes.
