Kochi, March 7 – India has granted emergency docking permission to the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Lavan after the ship reported technical difficulties while navigating the northern Indian Ocean, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The request for assistance was conveyed through diplomatic and maritime communication channels. Following standard security checks and consultations among naval authorities and relevant government departments, permission was granted under humanitarian provisions of international maritime practice.

The IRIS Lavan, a logistical support vessel used by the Iranian Navy for replenishment and extended deployments, sought safe harbor after encountering operational issues at sea. Indian port and naval authorities are supervising docking procedures, ensuring compliance with maritime regulations and security protocols. Technical teams are expected to assess the vessel’s condition, with logistical support such as fuel, water, and essential supplies provided if required.

Officials have not disclosed the exact location of the docking due to security considerations. The vessel will remain in port until necessary inspections and repairs are completed.

India’s response reflects its established maritime policy of assisting vessels in distress regardless of nationality, provided security requirements are met. Experts note that such emergency permissions are consistent with global maritime conventions and do not imply political or strategic alignment.

The development comes amid heightened concerns over maritime security in parts of West Asia and the wider Indian Ocean region. Despite the sensitive geopolitical climate, India has maintained its long-standing tradition of offering humanitarian assistance to ships facing emergencies at sea.
