Kochi, February 26 – The Kerala High Court on Wednesday ordered an interim stay on the release of the upcoming film Kerala Story 2, following petitions challenging its certification and content.

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, presiding over the matter, observed that while freedom of expression is constitutionally protected, it remains subject to reasonable restrictions in the interest of public order and social harmony. The court noted that objections regarding certification and potential societal impact must be examined with due seriousness.

The petition, filed by Sreedev Namboodri, sought judicial intervention to prevent the film’s release, contending that certain portions could be inflammatory and warranted reconsideration. After hearing submissions, the court directed the state government to pass an appropriate order within two weeks on the plea. The interim stay will remain in effect until further orders.

Counsel for the filmmakers opposed the petition, arguing that the film had undergone the prescribed certification process and should not be obstructed without a conclusive determination.

Kerala Story 2, positioned as a sequel to a film that previously generated intense public debate, was scheduled for theatrical release later this week. With the High Court’s intervention, exhibitors and distributors have been restrained from screening the film pending further developments.

The matter is expected to be taken up again after the government issues its decision on the petitioner’s representation.
