February 1, 2026, Colombo : The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 was thrown into uncertainty on Sunday after Pakistan announced it would not take the field for its scheduled group-stage match against India on February 15, despite receiving clearance to participate in the rest of the tournament.

In an official statement posted on social media, the Government of Pakistan said it had granted approval for the national team to compete in the global event but made it clear that the Pakistan side would not play the high-profile fixture against India. The match was scheduled to be held in Colombo, with the tournament being co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

The decision effectively hands India full points in the group stage through a walkover, though the International Cricket Council retains the authority to impose financial or disciplinary penalties on the Pakistan Cricket Board. Sources indicated that the PCB is expected to address the matter in greater detail in the coming days.

Pakistan are set to begin their T20 World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on February 7, followed by matches against the United States on February 10 and Namibia on February 18, all at the SSC ground in Colombo.

The boycott has been widely interpreted as a political protest linked to the ICC’s earlier decision to remove Bangladesh from the tournament after it declined to accept security assurances for hosting matches in India and sought a complete relocation of its fixtures to Sri Lanka. The ICC rejected that request and replaced Bangladesh with Scotland, triggering strong reactions within Pakistan’s cricketing and political circles.

The India–Pakistan clash is traditionally the most anticipated fixture in any ICC event, drawing massive global viewership and generating substantial broadcast and sponsorship revenue. While the immediate group-stage meeting is now off, uncertainty remains over what would happen if the two teams are drawn to face each other in the knockout stages, an issue neither the PCB nor the Pakistani government has clarified so far.

The development adds a fresh layer of complexity to an already sensitive tournament, highlighting once again how geopolitical tensions continue to spill over into international sport.
