Paris, Jan. 20, 2026 — Global trade relations face a significant new challenge as President Donald Trump announced a plan to impose 200 percent tariffs on French wine and champagne. This move comes as a direct response to indications that French President Emmanuel Macron will decline an invitation to join a newly proposed international body known as the Board of Peace.

The Board of Peace was originally introduced by the Trump administration last September as a framework to oversee the end of the conflict in Gaza and manage the subsequent rebuilding efforts. However, a draft charter for the organization recently circulated to approximately 60 nations suggests a much broader mandate. The document indicates the board would function as a permanent global assembly under the leadership of Trump, who would serve as its inaugural chairman with authority over membership and decision-making processes.

Tensions escalated on Monday when Trump reacted to reports of France’s refusal during a press briefing. He suggested that the steep tariffs would serve as a means to encourage participation, while also commenting on Macron’s upcoming departure from office at the end of his term in 2027. The proposed charter has also drawn scrutiny for its financial requirements, as it suggests member nations must contribute 1 billion dollars in cash if they wish for their membership to extend beyond an initial three-year period.

The diplomatic friction is not limited to the Middle East peace initiative. The United States has also linked trade penalties to its interest in purchasing Greenland. Washington previously announced that eight European nations, including France and Denmark, would face a 10 percent tariff on exports starting February 1 if they do not support the proposal to acquire the semi-autonomous Danish territory. Under that plan, the rate is scheduled to rise to 25 percent in June if no agreement is reached.

European leaders have expressed serious concerns regarding these measures. A spokesperson for the French government described the tariff threats as a form of economic pressure and maintained that the proposed board could undermine the existing United Nations framework. In response, the European Union is currently weighing its options, which may include the activation of an anti-coercion tool or the implementation of retaliatory tariffs on billions of dollars worth of American goods.
