Crans-Montana, Switzerland — A festive start to 2026 turned into tragedy in the Swiss Alps after a violent blaze tore through a crowded nightclub early on New Year’s Day, killing around 40 people and injuring more than 100 others in one of the deadliest peacetime disasters in recent Swiss memory.

The fire broke out shortly after 1:30 a.m. CET at Le Constellation, a popular bar and music venue in Crans-Montana, Valais canton, where hundreds of revelers were celebrating the New Year. Witnesses described panic as smoke and flames engulfed the basement venue, forcing some to smash windows to escape. Hospitals quickly reached capacity, with dozens of victims transferred to burn units across Switzerland and neighboring countries.

Investigators believe the blaze may have started when sparkler candles attached to champagne bottles ignited flammable soundproofing material, though the probe remains open as safety records and witness accounts are reviewed. Authorities are examining whether building materials, fire exits, and emergency preparedness met regulatory standards, with possible criminal negligence charges if lapses are confirmed.

The Swiss government declared five days of national mourning, with flags at half-mast nationwide. President Guy Parmelin called the disaster “one of the worst tragedies our country has experienced.” Families of victims gathered in Crans-Montana as identification efforts continued through DNA and dental records. Makeshift memorials of flowers and candles have appeared near the site, reflecting grief in a town usually associated with winter sports and holiday cheer.

Condolences have poured in from world leaders and international organizations, with France, Italy, and Greece offering support. Religious and community groups held vigils in honor of the lives lost. As investigations proceed and hospitals care for the injured, Switzerland faces difficult weeks ahead seeking accountability and solace in the wake of this shocking New Year’s tragedy.
