NEW YORK CITY — In a landmark victory, Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the 111th mayor of New York City, securing more than half the vote and defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo as well as Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Mamdani, aged 34, becomes the youngest person in over a century to hold the office, and the city’s first Muslim and Indian-origin mayor. His campaign—grounded in grassroots energy and a progressive platform targeting housing affordability, public transit, and worker rights—resonated strongly with first-time and younger voters.

“The future is in our hands,” Mamdani told supporters in his victory speech. He pledged to deliver a city government that works for working-class New Yorkers, not for elite interests, and to usher in what he described as a new chapter of fairness and shared prosperity.

Mamdani’s win signals a significant shift in New York’s political landscape, with progressive energy sweeping into the city’s top office just as national politics polarizes deeper.

He is scheduled to be sworn in on January 1, 2026, after which he will officially assume the responsibilities of the mayor’s office.
