Sherpur/Jhajjar, January 24, 2026:: The mortal remains of two Indian Army soldiers who lost their lives in a tragic road accident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district were cremated with full state honours at their native villages in Haryana on Saturday, amid emotional scenes and patriotic slogans.

The soldiers, identified as Sudhir Narwal and Mohit Chauhan, were among ten Army personnel who died after a bulletproof Casspir vehicle skidded off a mountain road and plunged into a deep gorge earlier this week. The accident occurred near Khanni top, located at an altitude of around 9,000 feet on the Bhaderwah–Chamba interstate road, when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, sending it tumbling nearly 200 feet down the slope.

Narwal’s body reached his native village Sherpur in Yamunanagar district on Saturday morning, where large numbers of residents gathered to pay their final respects. The atmosphere was charged with grief as well as patriotism, with mourners raising slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” during the funeral. In a deeply moving moment, Narwal’s four-year-old son lit the funeral pyre as the soldier was cremated with full state honours. Haryana minister Shyam Singh Rana, former minister Kanwar Pal Gurjar, along with several senior political leaders, administrative officers, and Army representatives, were present, while grieving family members stood inconsolable.

In Jhajjar district’s Gijarodh village, similar scenes unfolded during the cremation of Mohit Chauhan. His younger brother lit the funeral pyre amid chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Mohit amar rahe.” Villagers, relatives, and officials joined the family to bid farewell to the 26-year-old soldier.

Haryana minister Shyam Singh Rana described Narwal’s death as a significant loss for the state, as tributes continued to pour in for both soldiers from across the region.

Mohit Chauhan had joined the Army five years ago and is survived by his parents, wife, and younger brother. He had last visited his home in November. Both soldiers were remembered by locals as disciplined, dedicated, and proud sons of the soil.

The Army has initiated standard procedures following the accident, while tributes continue to honour the soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
