Amritsar, January 23, 2026 : Punjab Police on Friday announced the disruption of a suspected terror conspiracy ahead of Republic Day, following a series of intelligence-led operations that resulted in the arrest of six individuals allegedly linked to a banned extremist organisation.
Officials said the action was carried out by specialised police units operating in Amritsar and neighbouring districts after receiving inputs pointing to an imminent threat. The investigation led to the detention of a man from Tarn Taran district, from whom police recovered a hand grenade, a foreign-made pistol, live ammunition and a quantity of synthetic drugs.
Police believe the seized weapons were meant to be used in a targeted attack on a security-related facility. Further follow-up operations in Hoshiarpur district led to the arrest of five additional suspects and the recovery of an improvised explosive device containing RDX, along with firearms and cartridges.
Senior officers indicated that preliminary findings suggest the group was operating under instructions from handlers based outside India, with local operatives tasked with logistics, movement of weapons and coordination on the ground.
Cases have been registered under multiple security and narcotics laws, and investigators are continuing efforts to identify the full network, including financial channels and cross-border links. Authorities said security arrangements across the state have been reviewed as a precautionary measure.
