Hyderabad, February 22, 2026: Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao was taken into police custody on Sunday morning to prevent his visit to the tense Kamareddy district. The action followed a period of house arrest at his Tarnaka residence on Saturday night. Authorities detained him as he attempted to leave for Banswada and Kamareddy, where tensions have escalated over a land dispute involving a government degree college.
The unrest was triggered by a dispute over Government Degree College land, which BJP MLA Katipally Venkata Ramana Reddy alleged was being illegally handled by Congress leaders.
Police justified the detention as a preventive measure to maintain law and order. Heavy deployment remains in place at Rao’s residence and across Kamareddy district.
Before being shifted to the Bolarum police station, Rao criticized the restrictions as an attempt to suppress the opposition, stating he intended to meet injured party members. Senior BJP leaders condemned the police action, calling it undemocratic.
Local authorities continue to monitor the district closely, urging residents to avoid gatherings and refrain from spreading unverified information.
