New Delhi, January 29, 2026 : The Budget Session of Parliament for 2026 commenced on Thursday with the government placing strong emphasis on economic confidence, global engagement and forthcoming fiscal priorities. Ahead of the tabling of the Economic Survey, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media, describing the proposed Free Trade Agreement between India and the European Union as a step meant for an ambitious and self-assured India.
The Prime Minister said India’s growing confidence had positioned it as a source of optimism for the global economy. Referring specifically to the India-EU FTA, he urged domestic manufacturers and industries to prepare themselves to take advantage of new market opportunities that could emerge as trade barriers are reduced and access to European markets expands.
The Economic Survey for 2025–26 was scheduled to be presented in Parliament later in the day. Prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs under the supervision of the Chief Economic Adviser, the document reviews the performance of the Indian economy during the current financial year and outlines key trends, risks and prospects for the coming fiscal year.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is tabling the Economic Survey in both Houses of Parliament, followed by a press briefing by Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran, who is expected to elaborate on growth indicators, sectoral performance and the broader macroeconomic outlook. The Survey traditionally serves as the analytical foundation for the Union Budget, which will be presented on February 1.
The Budget Session will span 30 sittings over 65 days and is scheduled to conclude on April 2, 2026. Parliament will adjourn for a recess on February 13 and reconvene on March 9 to allow Standing Committees to scrutinise the Demands for Grants of various ministries and departments.
Earlier this week, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the joint sitting of both Houses at the start of the session, outlining the government’s vision centred on inclusive development under the theme of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, with particular focus on strengthening public healthcare and improving overall well-being.
Prime Minister Modi also highlighted that the upcoming Union Budget will mark Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s ninth consecutive Budget presentation, making her the first woman to achieve this milestone. The government has indicated that the Budget will seek to balance growth imperatives with fiscal discipline while building on the economic momentum outlined in the Economic Survey.
