Mumbai, January 19, 2026: The process of selecting the next Mayor of Mumbai remained unresolved on Monday despite the conclusion of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, with alliance partners within the Mahayuti still negotiating over the prized post. While leaders reiterated that the mayor will emerge from the ruling coalition, a final decision has been put on hold until Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis returns from the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos.

Following the declaration of results, the Mahayuti secured control of the 227-member civic body, ending weeks of speculation over whether the opposition could mount a challenge. However, the internal arithmetic of the alliance has complicated the choice of mayor. The Bharatiya Janata Party, despite emerging as the single largest party, fell short of a clear majority on its own and remains dependent on the support of the Eknath Shinde-led faction of the Shiv Sena to form a stable leadership in the civic house.

Addressing the media in Mumbai after a meeting with newly elected corporators, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that there was no ambiguity about the alliance retaining the mayor’s office, but acknowledged that consultations were still underway among senior leaders. He indicated that the final call would be taken collectively by the Mahayuti leadership.

Soon after the results, corporators belonging to the Shinde-led Sena were moved to a city hotel, a step the party described as an internal orientation exercise. Opposition parties, however, alleged resort politics, claiming the move was aimed at preventing any last-minute defections ahead of the mayoral election. The Sena faction dismissed these allegations, maintaining that all elected members remained firmly aligned with the coalition.

The outcome has underlined the shifting balance of power in Mumbai’s civic politics. While the BJP’s expanded presence has strengthened its claim to leadership positions, the Shiv Sena faction led by Shinde holds the balance in the mayoral contest, making negotiations unavoidable. Leaders from both sides have publicly played down differences, stressing the need for coordination to ensure smooth governance of the country’s richest municipal body.

The election also revived debates around identity and representation in Mumbai’s civic administration. Campaigns by various parties placed emphasis on Marathi pride, yet the final composition of the civic house reflected the city’s diverse social fabric, with a significant number of corporators hailing from non-Marathi backgrounds.

With the Mahayuti firmly in control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, attention has now shifted from numbers to consensus. Until senior leaders, including those from the BJP and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, arrive at a mutually acceptable arrangement, Mumbai will have to wait for clarity on who will occupy the mayor’s chair in the coming year.
