January 28, 2026 | Srinagar : A high-intensity snow avalanche struck the prominent tourist resort of Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district late Tuesday night. The incident, which occurred at approximately 10:12 pm, follows a period of relentless heavy snowfall that has blanketed the region over the last twenty-four hours.
According to local reports and official statements, the snow slide occurred near a busy stretch that houses several prominent establishments, including the Inter Mountain Sonamarg and Sonamarg Inn hotels. CCTV footage that has since been shared widely across social media platforms captured the moment a massive wall of snow descended upon the area, sweeping past buildings and engulfing the truck yard located near the local toll post.
Despite the visual scale of the event, authorities have confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries. MLA Kangan Mian Mehar Ali stated that while the avalanche did move through areas with guest houses, many of these structures were fortunately vacant at the time. Police officials also verified that no loss of life has been reported from the site.
The weather conditions in the valley remain challenging. The heavy accumulation of snow had already led to the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and the cancellation of all flights at Srinagar airport earlier on Tuesday. Disaster management teams were already on high alert, as a high-danger avalanche warning had been issued for the district just a day prior to the incident.
Emergency teams are currently on the ground to assess any potential property damage and monitor the stability of the surrounding slopes. Residents and travelers in the Ganderbal region have been advised to remain cautious and avoid venturing into higher elevations until the weather stabilizes and the threat of further slides diminishes.
