January 28, 2026 | Mumbai : Indian financial markets closed on a positive note on Tuesday, supported by gains in benchmark indices even as global and domestic indicators presented a mixed picture. The NSE Nifty 50 ended at 25,342.75, rising by 167.35 points or 0.66 percent, while the BSE Sensex settled at 82,344.68, up 487.20 points or 0.60 percent. Trading activity remained measured, with investors tracking movements in commodities, currency and global energy prices.

In the commodities space, precious metals showed strength. The rate for 24-carat gold in Mumbai stood at ₹1,68,140 for 10 grams, reflecting sustained demand amid currency volatility and global uncertainties. Bullion prices have shown a steady rise through January, drawing interest from investors seeking a hedge against inflation and rupee weakness.

Silver prices were largely stable with a firm undertone. The metal was trading at around ₹38,000 per kilogram, or ₹380 per gram for 999 purity, with only marginal variations reported across major cities. The steady trend suggested balanced demand from industrial users and investors.

On the currency front, the Indian rupee weakened further against the US dollar. The exchange rate hovered around ₹91.90 per dollar, underscoring ongoing pressure from global dollar strength and capital flow dynamics. Currency traders remained cautious ahead of key global economic cues.

Crude oil prices offered some relief on the inflation front. Brent crude was trading near $65.25 per barrel, down about 0.46 percent on the day. The dip came amid expectations of adequate global supply and a cautious demand outlook.

Overall, the session reflected cautious optimism in equities, firmness in precious metals, pressure on the rupee and softness in crude oil. Analysts said investors are likely to remain selective in the near term, keeping a close watch on global macroeconomic signals and their impact on domestic markets.
