Guwahati, February 22, 2026: Former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Borah formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party today at the state party headquarters, Vajpayee Bhawan. The induction ceremony was attended by state unit president Dilip Saikia and senior party leaders. Borah had resigned from the Congress on February 16, ending a three-decade association with the party.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who met Borah earlier in the week to finalize the transition, welcomed the move as a homecoming. Alongside Borah, several Congress workers, including Sanju Bora, also joined the BJP.

Party leaders stated that Borah’s entry would strengthen the organization at the grassroots level. Having recently served as the campaign committee chairman for the opposition, Borah is expected to play a key role in the ruling party’s preparations for the upcoming assembly elections.

The development marks a significant shift in Assam’s political landscape as parties consolidate their bases ahead of the electoral contest.
