Three doctors at Mumbai’s Dr R.N. Cooper Hospital were assaulted late Friday night by a patient’s relative after his 57-year-old mother died in the emergency ward. The accused, Sameer Abdul Jabbar Shaikh, allegedly punched and abused the doctors following the death declaration.
Dr Gaurav Anandgaonkar, Dr Prashant Bhadke, and Dr Karan Desai sustained injuries, while security personnel reportedly failed to intervene. The assault, captured on CCTV, triggered a protest by over 300 resident doctors demanding armed security and faster police action.
The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors warned of a statewide strike if adequate protection was not ensured. BMC officials have promised stronger security measures and 24-hour surveillance in all municipal hospitals.
