The investigation into the high-intensity car explosion that killed at least 12 people near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening has been officially handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), signaling the government’s intent to treat the incident as a suspected act of terrorism.

The blast, which tore through a white Hyundai i20 at the Subhash Marg traffic signal, injured 19 others and damaged several nearby vehicles. Preliminary forensic analysis suggests the use of ammonium nitrate and a fuel-based accelerant, possibly combined with detonators — pointing to a deliberately engineered device.

Investigators are focusing on the vehicle’s driver, believed to be a medical professional from Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. While some reports name Dr. Umar Nabi, officials have not confirmed the identity, pending DNA verification. The possibility of a fidayeen-style (suicide) attack is being explored, especially after intelligence agencies disrupted a suspected module earlier that day.

Emerging leads suggest the existence of a “white-collar” terror network operating across Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. At least eight individuals have reportedly been detained, including professionals linked to Faridabad-based institutions. Raids have led to the seizure of large quantities of explosive material, though the exact figure — reportedly 2,900 kg.

CCTV footage shows the suspect remained inside the parked car for nearly three hours before the explosion, reinforcing suspicions of a premeditated, timed act. The NIA is now tracing the funding trail, logistical support, and ideological affiliations of the module. Preliminary intelligence points to possible links with Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

In response to the tragedy, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹10 lakh for families of the deceased, ₹5 lakh for those permanently disabled, and ₹2 lakh for the seriously injured. Additional aid will be provided through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Security has been tightened across the National Capital Region (NCR) and neighboring states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack, stating that those responsible “will face the full wrath of the law.”

As the investigation deepens, the nation watches closely — seeking answers, accountability, and assurance that such violence will not go unanswered.
