New Delhi, February 12, 2026 โ The budget session of Parliament witnessed heightened tensions on Thursday after Bharatiya Janata Party MP Nishikant Dubey submitted a substantive motion in the Lok Sabha seeking the disqualification of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
According to the notice filed with the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Dubey has urged that Gandhiโs membership be terminated and that he be barred from contesting elections in the future. The move follows sharp exchanges in the House over remarks Gandhi made during a speech on Wednesday, where he cited passages from an unpublished book by former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane. BJP leaders allege that the references misrepresented the Army and the Prime Ministerโs Office.
The notice further accuses Gandhi of engaging in a โpattern of conductโ aimed at destabilizing the country, including alleged links with international organizations such as the Soros Foundation. While the government initially considered a breach of privilege motion, it opted for a substantive motion, which, if admitted by the Speaker, could be put to a direct vote.
The Congress party has strongly criticized the move, calling it an attempt to suppress dissent and silence questions raised on the Union Budget and trade policy. Heated exchanges between treasury and opposition benches led to the adjournment of the Lok Sabha for the day.
Political observers note that the Speakerโs decision on whether to admit the motion will determine the next phase of this confrontation, which has already deepened divisions in the ongoing session.
